Anybody work in that area?
Need a bit of advice for my nephew. Looking to get into it - wanting to know where to start.
What best avenue to go down? Professional qualification? Self teach?
Remember a few coders/web guys on here so any help and general cunting of my family bloodline would be much appreciated as always...

I manage a web applications group. Acquiring structured/best practice knowledge is valuable, but possessing the ability to learn on your own and being able to apply it to a tangible result is more important to me when evaluating candidates.
I would tell someone to start by learning on their own and creating a site/application of that person's choosing to put it all together. If they enjoy that process then they will enjoy web development and they will also have something to demonstrate their skill. You can always take courses along the way.

There's a shed load of free resources out there.
These two are quite good but you have to pay for the more advanced stuff.

I could list a few more but it all rather depends if he wants to go into Web Design and dicking around with the front-end or Web Development where the clever fuckers make everything work.
I started off doing both about 16 years ago and am now working primarily as a developer (although do some design on the side through my own company).
If you want any more advice give me a shout.
